1986年12月29日，54岁的塔可夫斯基在巴黎病逝。临终之际，他的儿子才获准离境与父亲团聚，成为他生命最后时刻的一丝慰藉。颇具戏剧性的是，就在他去世的第二天，与他针锋相对多年的苏联国家电影委员会主席叶尔马什被降职并提前退休。这场迟到的“胜利”，于塔可夫斯基而言已毫无意义。
